Celebrate Janmashtami with Seva: A Sacred Annadaan Drive in Kashi

Janmashtami, the divine celebration of Lord Krishna’s birth, is a festival that radiates joy, devotion, and compassion. Traditionally, devotees worship Bal Gopal or Laddu Gopal, the child form of Krishna, offering milk, sweets, and prayers to seek his blessings for prosperity and peace. But in the sacred city of Kashi (Varanasi) , a group of passionate young men from the Akhya Foundation have found a powerful way to honour Lord Krishna—through Annadaan (food donation) for Brahmins, sadhus, saints, and slum dwellers.

“Every Sadhu, Every Hungry Soul is a Roop of Kanha”

While the city lights up with bhajans and festivities, the streets of Kashi remain home to thousands—wandering saints, poor Brahmins, and slum-dwelling families—many of whom go hungry during festivals that others celebrate with abundance. For the past 4 years, Akhya Foundation has been quietly working to eliminate hunger among the most neglected souls in Uttar Pradesh, with a humble mission: to serve at least one nutritious meal a day to those who need it the most.

“This isn’t just feeding people—it’s our way of offering bhog to Lord Krishna himself,” shares a young volunteer from Akhya Foundation. “On Janmashtami, every sadhu, every poor child, every hungry person is no different from Kanha. Serving them is our true worship.”

A Brotherhood Fueled by Seva

Started by a group of young boys in Varanasi, Akhya Foundation was born out of compassion and a shared purpose—to feed the hungry and uphold the spirit of selfless service. Every morning, these volunteers wake up before dawn, collect donations, and prepare simple, nutritious meals like khichdi, puri-sabzi, seasonal fruits, and sweets.

They personally deliver these meals to ashrams, temples, roadside camps of sadhus, and slum communities, ensuring that no soul goes without food , especially on sacred days like Janmashtami.

“Our Annadaan is our Arpan to Lord Krishna”

This Janmashtami, Akhya Foundation plans to distribute, sweets, and full meals to people, including poor Brahmins, saints resting on the ghats, and underprivileged children in Varanasi’s slums at Kailesh Math Campus. With just ₹301, a donor can sponsor a complete Janmashtami meal that includes sweets, puris, and fruits for one person.

“Every smile we see after a meal feels like Krishna’s blessing,” says the team. “We may not have much, but what we do have, we offer it with full devotion.”
